We're group of people interested in improving their audio-visual storytelling skills. The bulk of our work takes the form of modern digital "slide shows", but we are open to all audio-visual media. We are just getting started, so look for this site to grow in the years to come.
What is "animatography"? Today's "slideshows" are more than just static images flashing up on a screen. We include visual effects, music, sound effects and animation of our photographs. We were looking for an updated term for what we do, and hit upon "animated photography" or "animatography". While we thought this was a wonderful newly invented word, it turns out it was a term used to describe motion pictures in the early 20th century. What was old is now new again?!
Our members are typical amateur photographers with varying amounts of experience, but we come together in an interest to take our imagery to a new level of presentation, we seek to tell "stories" with our images, and to engage our audiences both emotionally and intellectually, be they family, friends, or even the general public. We are open to using every form of media available to us, not limiting ourselves to just a static single frame, we'll be looking at video treatments of photographs, but also video and audio production techniques.
To help us practice, we gather from time to time sharing shows with each other for feedback. Members who learn new tricks, or have other information to share also present at our meetings. We're too small for a classroom setting just yet, so we just meet in each other's living rooms ... someday when we get large enough, we'll look at larger facilities!
We are also trying to do practice outings, going to locations to practice photography, but more importantly learning to look for the "story" in a setting and take into consideration that the types of shots one does for "artsy" photography is often not enough for a video-style presentation
As photographers, most of us are presenting our shows using Photodex's Proshow product, enough power for some serious artistic videos, but still easy to learn for those of us still on the technical learning curve.
If you happen to live in the area around Vancouver, BC, feel free to drop by one of our meetings.

We try to meet at least once a month, the third Thursday evening of the month.
If you would like to join us, send an email to: info@animatography.photoclans.net and check out the meetings page for updates. (we're a small informal group, so our meetings tend to move around)
